These bulky insects are in the same order as grasshoppers, crickets, and katydids (Orthoptera). Males call at night, making a high-pitched sound used to attract females and claim their territory. They are known to have fierce fights over both. They can be found from southern British Columbia and Alberta, south to northern California and southern Idaho. They feed on the flowers of coniferous trees and broad-leaved shrubs; sometimes also eating fruit and small insects.
